Working to obtain justice in housing for all MD residents, BNI serves 18,000 to 20,000 people each year as they seek to resolve the most basic of issues – ensuring that all have access to housing. Our publications provide the information you need to know your rights and responsibilities, whether you are a tenant or a landlord. Join BNI in promoting justice in housing for all.
Programs & Services

Fair Housing
The Fair Housing Program of BNI works to ensure that all people in Maryland may freely choose where to live without regard to their race, color, religion, national origin, disability, gender, familial status, marital status, or sexual orientation. Our activities include investigations, response to complaints, advertising studies, disability surveys, education and outreach, reasonable accommodation and modification assistance, legislative action and the promotion of diverse communities. We seek to educate and inform so that justice in housing is achieved throughout our state.
Tenant-Landlord
The Tenant-Landlord program of BNI seeks to improve the relationship between tenants and landlords by informing them of their rights under the law. Within Maryland, there are state laws and local legislation that pertain to landlords’ and tenants’ rights and responsibilities. BNI publishes guides to these laws and offers a valuable tenant and landlord introduction packet that can be purchased online or by mail. We have a HOTLINE that serves the whole State of Maryland except for Montgomery County and we offer referrals for legal assistance and financial assistance .As with our Fair Housing program, Tenant-Landlord seeks to inform through our education and outreach efforts.
